The year is 2043. For decades, mechs known as REAVERS have dominated popular culture. They appear in movies, TV shows, even one particularly ill-advised musical - but nowhere have they been more popular than in REAVER fights. The new craze among kids and teenagers have swept the world. Small miniatures of REAVER mechs clash on the battlefield, controlled from afar by their pilots using phone-like apparatuses. Kids duke it out on the streets, dreaming of making it big enough to participate in the Showdown - the ultimate tournament of REAVER fights.

And you? You are going straight to the top.

I played this with a friend on a whim after we couldn't get enough people to play another game. We weren't super sure what to expect but oh my god. We literally had the best time ever and were blown away by how fun of a game this is and how well it works. The tic-tac-toe mechanic works incredibly well and the prompts are incredibly fun and useful for guiding the story and creating tense and dramatic moments. It felt perfectly paced and focused, and was extremely satisfying to play from beginning to end. This game brings out the best in over the top competitive anime tropes and it's just overall a joy to play. Extremely easy, short set up, big pay off, and it only took us a couple hours of pure fun to complete. Absolutely recommend.

I got to play this with my friend Alex and we had a total blast with it! (If you'd like me to change the thumbnail image on this or anything, drop me a line!)

Rev Your Engines does away with the war and murder of the mecha genre and instead frames mechs in an even more terrifying arena: competitive children’s sports. The game cites Gundam Build Fighters and Yu-Gi-Oh as inspirations, but I can’t help but think of it as essentially a Battlebots RPG. You play as two teenage rivals, each certain that they can pilot their miniature mechs straight to the top. This is a game about the emotional drama and personal conflict that is sparked by competition, and uses an absurd combination of tic-tac-toe and flashbacks to simulate your favorite competitive anime.
